Some Sing: A Juneteenth Celebration was a Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts campus-wide jubilee honoring the richness of Black sound and aesthetics in all theirvernacular and complex forms. Dianne Smith’s intricate costume and scenic designs created a visual tapestry, immersing the audience in a journey through time. Rux's vision celebrated music as a unifying force, an agent of growth and freedom, invoking its roles in work songs, prison laments, spirituals, and commemorations. Across different performance spaces, audiences experienced the sounds of influential free jazz experimentalist Cooper-Moore, Bronx-born soul musician Stephanie McKay, and others, culminating in a powerful concert led by Herb Alpert Award-winning composer Toshi Reagon(Parable of the Sower) and her full band.
